Sustainable transport is a crucial component of sustainable development. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals it established fully reflect the important supporting role of transport in achieving global sustainable development. In response to the major challenges currently facing the global transport system, the United Nations successfully convened the Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference in Beijing from October 14 to 16, 2021, and issued the Beijing Statement. The declaration reaffirms the importance of sustainable transport, outlines a future vision for global sustainable transport development, proposes action initiatives to enhance transport cooperation, and calls on all stakeholders to take collective action to accelerate the transition toward sustainable transport.
The Global Sustainable Transport Forum is hosted by the Ministry of Transport of China and organized by the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center, aims to promote global transport cooperation and construct a safe, convenient, efficient, green, economical, inclusive and resilient sustainable transport system, which is an inherent requirement of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and an important way to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
The Global Sustainable Transport Forum (2023) was successfully held in Beijing on September 25-26, 2023, with the theme of “Sustainable Transport: Working Together to Support Global Development”. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the forum, Vice Premier He Lifeng attended and read out the letter.

The Senior Officials‘ Meeting of the Global Sustainable Transport Forum and the 12th Meeting of Transport Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states was held in Tianjin from June 30 to July 2, 2025, with the theme of "Promoting the Shanghai Spirit and Promoting Sustainable Transport Cooperation".
